Where was An American Werewolf in London (1981) filmed?
10 locations on the HorrorMeet Atlas.
- Crickadarn, Powys, Wales
The exterior of the Slaughtered Lamb, complete with the red phone box, is a cottage in this Welsh village standing in for East Proctor. The hanging Angel of Death sign was a prop, and the cottage is now a restored PRIVATE RESIDENCE: view from the lane only.
- The Black Swan, Martyr's Green, Surrey
The interior of the Slaughtered Lamb, with the five-pointed star on the wall and the darts game that stops dead, was shot in this Surrey pub. It is still open, now as a smarter restaurant-pub, and the layout is recognizable.
- Piccadilly Circus, London
The pile-up finale was shot here across two nights between 1 and 4 in the morning, the first film permitted to close the Circus in fifteen years. The junction is still a landmark, though the Eros cinema where David hides was demolished and the corner is now a clothing store.
- Tottenham Court Road Underground station
The escalator and tunnel chase in which a commuter is hunted down was filmed here outside service hours. The station is still open and was heavily rebuilt for Crossrail.
- ZSL London Zoo, Regent's Park
David wakes up naked in the wolf enclosure here the morning after his first transformation. The zoo is still open, although the terraces used in the scene have been rebuilt.
- Trafalgar Square, London
David leaps out of a taxi here after hearing the news reports of the killings. The square was pedestrianized on its north side in 2003 but is otherwise as filmed.
- Coleherne Road, Earl's Court
Nurse Alex Price's flat, where the second transformation happens, is in a terrace on this Earl's Court street. These are PRIVATE RESIDENCES: look from the pavement and do not ring any bells.
- The Pryors, East Heath Road, Hampstead
The grand red-brick mansion block beside Hampstead Heath is where the werewolf attacks a resident. It is still a PRIVATE apartment building: view it from East Heath Road.
- Clink Street, Southwark
The dead-end alley of the final confrontation was created here, with a false wall built across the street. The street layout survives but the warehouses have been rebuilt into flats and the Clink Prison Museum sits nearby.
- Hay Bluff, Black Mountains, Wales
The bleak open moor where David and Jack are dropped off and told to stick to the road was shot on the high ground near Hay Bluff. It is still open access land with a car park at the foot of the bluff.
