  The morgue sequence, where the wife is taken to identify a body, was shot in the real Paris forensic institute on the Seine by the Pont d'Austerlitz. It is still the city morgue and is not open to the public.

• Montfort-l'Amaury, Yvelines

  Nicole's house, written as being in Niort, was actually filmed in this hill town west of Paris, opposite a building Clouzot had already used in Le Corbeau. Montfort-l'Amaury is a small tourist town with a ruined castle above it.

• L'Etang-la-Ville, Yvelines

  Clouzot spent five weeks shooting the boarding school, and its notorious swimming pool, at a run down chateau in this village between Saint-Cloud and Saint-Germain. The village is on the Paris suburban rail network.
