- Salmon Glacier, British Columbia
Outpost 31, the American research station, was built as a full standing set on the ice about 15 miles north of Stewart. The set is long gone but the glacier is still reachable by the Salmon Glacier road in summer.
- Stewart, British Columbia
This isolated port town was the production base and the site of the exterior American and Norwegian camp sets. Both camps were built for the film and no longer exist.
- Universal Studios Hollywood
All the station interiors were shot on refrigerated soundstages here, chilled to about 40 degrees so the actors' breath would show. The lot is still a working studio and theme park.
